Scientists are paying more and more attention to how the body ages at the level of its cells. A handful of peptides (small chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins) come up often in this work. Peptides studied in longevity research
- Epithalon · looked at in lab studies for how it relates to telomeres. Telomeres are the protective caps on the ends of our DNA strands, and they tend to wear down as cells age.
- GHK-Cu · a peptide that carries copper. Research has examined it for how it may affect which genes are switched on, how the body makes collagen, and how skin repairs itself.
- GDF-11 · a signaling protein. Studies have looked at it in cells and tissues that are aging.
- KLOTHO · a protein that researchers have linked to some of the body's aging-related signals.
How researchers approach aging pathways
Most of this research zeroes in on a few basic processes inside cells. These include keeping telomeres healthy, dealing with oxidative stress (everyday wear and tear from unstable molecules), repairing damaged DNA, and helping cells renew themselves. Keep in mind that most of the studies so far have been done in the lab or in animals, not people. So the results point in interesting directions, but they are not proof, and there is still very little human data.
